Paris... the city of cafes, wine, baguettes, more baguettes, walking and beautiful architecture. If the french aren't enjoying life, I don't know what they're doing. A dream city for romance, inspiration and practicing your french. Surprisingly, I am learning a little.

Weekend trips to Rome and Portugal are almost as cheap as the wine... pictures of those two fabulous excursions coming soon. For now, I have to get out of the flat and visit Musee D'Orsay. Hi Manet!

City of Dreams

I left my house in a panic just after dark, suitcase, backpack and purse dragging behind my trench, scarf and hat shielding me from being disturbed on the bus.

It was pouring rain as I left Toronto, watching the dark streets and lights of the city I have come to know disappear behind me as the double decker bus pulled onto the highway. With 10 hours ahead of me, I pulled down my hat, fluffed my scarf and rest my eyes while listening to a New York themed playlist.

City of Dreams here I come.

The ride was rocky, uncomfortable and less than solid. When I finally peeled my eyes open it was after our arrival time of 7 a.m. and we were no longer on the highway. We were pulling into Manhattan.

The New Yorker hotel's bright red sign sparked a beat in my chest. I swallowed, sat up and prepared myself for the wrath of the city.

But over the next few days... what did I find instead?

A favorite bakery I first found while in L.A. (Le Pain Quotidien) right across the street from a park, where old men were playing chess. Just as I stepped inside it began to pour with rain. A perfect place to eat my almond nut loaf, drink my tea and gaze out the window.

Famous streets, cool neighborhoods and exhilarating buildings. I had breakfast in the Dean and Deluca in the New York times building, while reading the paper.

Familiar faces: A good friend from Winnipeg gave me the grand tour- Times Square, Magnolia Bakery and Rockefeller Center.

Hung out alone on the Upper West side- crab cakes for lunch, shopping, starbucks, pretending to be interested in real estate, shopping and more fantasizing about buying the second one in from the right.

More things I love about New York: the people who are surprisingly so helpful and friendly, the excitement, the neighborhoods, the attitude, the food, the cabs, the subways, the grid street system, the trees, the opportunities.

And... my last NY picture... taken from inside the bus, it rained as I left. The bus driver made sure to give me one last glimpse of my New Yorker sign and I smiled with more than 10 hours worth of memories and thoughts to keep me going.

I truly do <3 NY.

I love baking blogs, I love cookies and I love tea parties. However, I cannot bake. That's where my sister comes in. Today I bring you: a guest post by my lovely sister. Enjoy! xxx, Shopahallic.

imperial cookies. enough said.

Spring is in the air. Even in Winnipeg where there is still snow on the ground, the days are longer and the sun is brighter signaling the onset of a new season. One can't help but be inspired to incorporate a fresh, spring-like approach to everything - fashion, home design, and my personal favorite, baking.

To me, there is nothing more delicious than imperial cookies. These buttery, icing-laden, jam-filled treats are well-known to Winnipeggers as they tease us from the shelves of every local bakery and coffee shop. I was always scared to bake them myself, perhaps worrying that I wouldn't be able to re-create the perfection of my favorite haunts, like High Tea Bakery. But with a lazy Saturday stretching in front of me, I realized it was the perfect day to try.

One problem? It was next to impossible to find a recipe. It truly seems like imperial cookies are unique to Winnipeg. So I settled on using a shortbread recipe and experimented for the rest.

To my surprise and delight, they worked out perfectly!

enjoy.

1 cup unsalted butter

1 cup white sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon pure almond extract

4 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 tablespoons milk

1 cup raspberry jam

2 cups icing sugar

1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

3 tablespoons hot water

Pre-set oven to 350 degrees F.
Cream butter. Add sugar, cream well. Beat in eggs, vanilla and almond extract.
In separate bowl, combine flour and baking powder.
Gradually add flour to the creamed mixture, add milk towards the end.
Divide the dough into four parts. Roll each part to 1/8 inch thickness. (I rolled the dough between 2 sheets of parchment paper because the dough was quite crumbly at first). Cut out dough into 2 inch rounds and place on parchment paper-lined cookie sheets.
Bake for 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow to cool for 15 minutes.
Spread jam onto half of the cookies (the thicker the better!)and top with remaining cookies.
Mix icing sugar with vanilla and almond extracts. Add the hot water as needed until you have a thin, spreadable icing. Frost cookies with icing.

The Color of March

While it seems to be the color of march for many reasons - the cover of Vogue, my sisters new living room color, my new dress, and now my new ring, I think this color has longevity far beyond just March. It is my new favorite hue that seems to be more like a glow. How convenient that it looks fabulous against all of my caramels and cognacs, especially for spring and summer.

I have been lusting after various items in this shade for a long while and recently started swiping my card. On a gray, boring Monday, I couldn't help but buy myself a glowing little treat to sparkle on my finger and make me feel a little bit better and a lot more excited for my later spring travels.

This ring will look lovely in Paris.

Good Girl Gone Green

So for the past few weeks I have been trying to eat healthier and exercise. I have kept up with the exercising, but not so much with the eating healthy. Despite me reading a few amazing healthy food blogs, I make these great recipes and the next day discount it all with a plate of french fries. So, I decided to look to the pro's. Tracey Anderson is Gwenyth Paltrow's trainer and nutrition coach, many of her recipes and tips have been posted on Gwen's blog GOOP, which I read frequently. So today I decided to try a few of her healthy smoothies, since I am obsessed with my new magic bullet. One being - kale juice.

I have always been frightened of kale, as it looks strange, smells weird and has a very odd texture. But in a quest for health and fitness, one must be adventurous! So, here it is- apple, kale and water for a lighter texture.

Blended together to make a very interesting "smoothie". My rating? B. I will drink it for the healthy benefits but it is definitely not something I will ever crave.

Welcome to the new Shop-a-hall-ic.

While I still love clothes, fashion, trends, vogue and everything else beautiful to look at, wear and play with, fashion is not the only part of my life. In fact recently (as I am sure you can tell due to the lack of posts), it is a small part of my life. Over the past 6 months since living in the big city, I have become less obsessed with what to wear each morning, and more obsessed with getting my body through the hectic schedules I have created.

I have become even more determined to pursue my dreams than ever before, and those dreams don't completely involve fashion.

Moving to the media center of Canada and the biggest city in the country was about living up to the standards I have set for myself since I was a child. And finally in this past semester, I am feeling in touch with where I want to be and where I am going.

My brother inspired me to believe that I am allowed to have more than one dream and that I can try to make more than one thing happen at once - he is the master of this. So, for the past little while and the in the next long while, everything I do is working towards the things I want. But along the way, I am going to be continue to live the fabulous life I've always tried to create.

This new chapter to my blog will be the documentation of my quest and pursuit of being stylish, fit, hardworking and of course - always shopping.

Allow me to bore or entertain you with the next few months of my life.

The best is yet to come.

Right now I am dreaming of spring time and trying to think of all of the ways I can brighten up my life... spring must-have post coming soon.

But my usual spring excitement has turned from more than just the clothes. Living in my own place has made me start craving for ways to brighten the 600 sq ft up. Art is just the way to do it.

So right now, I can't stop browsing the Etsy store of an American artist I discovered on the Harpers Bazaar blog.

While I would like to make a triumphant return to the blogging world with the latest fashion advice or my fabulous holiday outfits, I must admit I have really been curled up next to the fireplace reading book after book over the winter break... So while I catch up on the fashion world myself I may as well give you a teaser of the fun I have been having with my new baby- the best christmas present ever - the Canon Rebel EOS DSLR.

I stopped by the sparkling Assiniboine park one night around witching hour. My favorite time of day wherever I am -- before and after sunset when the sky is colorful but the air that surrounds you casts grey shadows. The perfect lighting for my new camera to get broken in...

Winter White

Whoever said "don't wear white after labour day" must have been a very messy person. The only reason I could think of for not doing it, is the possibility your whites could dirty with the fall leaves, grass and snow... but I am not rolling around outside, are you?

Unless you were living under a rock with no access to the internet or fashion magazines, you probably bought a white blazer this summer. And now it is probably in the back of your closet wasting space and looking lonely.

Well, grab it. Paired with dark colours, leathers, suedes, and furs, there's nothing more scrumptious than a winter white.

My recent lack of posting can be attributed to too much work, lack of camera cord AND my recent obsession with cooking and recipes... maybe I'll start adding in food to this blog...

Ever since I made killer chocolate caramel skor squares at thanksgiving and delicious red pepper steak dinner for my family when I was home, Ive been planning my meals around the most interesting thing I can find in cookbooks - last nights selection: homemade tomato salsa tilapia. Now, I just need to host a dinner party to share my new found food love.

Until then, my roommate will continue to tromp around Toronto outdoing me in the fashion department. Always looking effortlessly stylish, put together but yet so comfortable. How does she do it?

"Simplicity" says Lawrence.

"I'm more concentrated on getting to where I want to go while being comfortable, I don't want to have to be yanking and pulling at things all day to keep them on, or only be able to wear an item with certain things"

Hmmm, seems like the only thing I do with my wardrobe is yank and pull, perhaps I need to do a closet overhaul.

Gray on Bay

A gray Saturday in late September calls for boot shopping, warm coffee, and book reading. C and I celebrated the brisk weather by doing exactly that. But not before a fun "photo shoot" on our rooftop. This place is great for tanning, cooking steaks or entertaining guests, but we like it best when we have it all to ourselves, away from the noise of this crazy city.

Over the knee socks is our new favorite thing... wear them before you need full tights!

Sorry for the lack of recent posts, I took a minor leave of absence from my blogging to fully immerse myself in my new Journalism school and concentrate on my sudden bout of published writing jobs! (Also, I forgot my camera cord back in Winnipeg so I have several amazing shots on a camera waiting to be uploaded... expect big things!) Anyway, all I think about these days are boots and chunky sweaters... SO here we go..(yes it's long but by the end you will have so many ideas!)

Fall 2010 Beauty: RED

As the days get shorter and your suntan starts to fade, take note of the changing leaves

and follow suit by switching up your go-to beauty colors. While this past summer you’ve been

playing up your girlie side with pale pinks and cute corals, fall 2010 calls for something bold – red.

The perfectly defined red lip statement dominated the fall 2010 runways in February by

designers like Nannette Lepore, Herve Leger, Givenchy and DSquared2. The clothes on the

catwalks said “I am strong, I am woman” while the lips add in “but also beautiful”. In the past, red

lips were often matched with feminine, flirtatious outfits. However, fall 2010 introduces a new take

dress or layers of sweaters and scarves. This season’s red is for the modern woman who is smart,

In light of my recent post, I thought my Fall 2010 drool post should all be from the one and only -- Topshop.

Some may think its crazy to wish for the days of brisk wind, coats, and even snow but for me, I cannot wait!

If I had it my way, this is what I would be wearing..

Red lips, green harem pants, shearling coats, leather booties, red leather (resembles the Alexa Mulberry bag, non?)

If you have the will, the funds and the way, all of these lovely items are found at Top Shop and cannot be more trendy for the fall season. I also like to think they are each item is quite versatile and could be worn in many fall/winter seasons for many years to come.

I am on the hunt for a new school, everyday, multi-use, large bag this fall. I have been hunting high and low on the internet and I seriously cannot find anything that I like even at the highest price point! Okay, well maybe its easier up there but I don't think my books need a $2000 carry case yet...but if they did.

It would be the Mulberry bag, the "Alexa". The It girl Alexa Chung inspired Mulberry to create the perfect bag, which Miss Chung likes to carry around the world in every color, paired with the most daring and darling outfits. Chungs personal style is a mix between British tea and LA rock, and something so unique in itself she turns heads whereever she goes. A beauty queen that does not try too hard, in fact her effortless attitude is the best part. Vogue describes her perfectly to be "so beautiful that she is intimidating, yet she just isn't". It seems if you met her it would feel like she was an old friend -- with the sweetest style.

So of course, the bag named after her is beyond quality. Practical, sensible, daring, and so so beautiful. I want to curl up with the soft leather it is made of... OR just carry it around proudly.

The cognac color is my favorite and will be the top color for my lower price range search this fall.

But how can you resist the patent leather?

Target is set to have Mulberry create a line of lower priced designer handbags coming out in October, get this, featured around the Alexa bag!

Hmmm, has someone been reading my mind? A lower priced Alexa bag, this sounds to good to be true.

Any Canadians want to take a roadtrip with me in October? I must be the first in line.

Long before I knew what the word blog meant, I wrote in a journal. I still remember my first one and insults I would write about my brothers in it.

While I do not pour out my deepest feelings and thoughts into my blog, I consider it my alternate form of my personal expression... consequently my journal has suffered.

In a hazy, concrete summer, I have found it hard to become inspired in any way in my life. Usually this is an area that I excel in, it frequently comes and goes but lately its been more going than coming. Here in my favorite place in the world, my sunroom, rain pouring through the Elms outside I have reinvented myself. I have promised to stay up the whole night and just do the things I have wanted to do since May.

Blog more than random pictures, write in my journal, and rediscover my life through my room filled with it.

I read every article in the new Vogue, scoured the pictures and felt connected to my creativity.

I read one of the blogs I frequent, a girl who I consider to be the best in blogging business, and she wrote that she was having doubts about why started a blog. I was so surprised to see this confident, fashion fatale so insecure about the impact she has had. It made me think of the same question, why do I do this when it could really mean nothing? It is the question I often ask myself and it is usually my motivation for not posting for another day...week or longer.

Then as I sat here, wishing I could write the way the vogue staff and writers do, look like Gwyneth Paltrow on the cover, and wear the clothes in the editorial, I realized that in the smallest way my blog is my personal Vogue. It is my own growth through style and writing, and it is my hobby that makes me happy. I blog when on days like this when I am inspired and I blog when I am happy, in no way is it a self promotion or job. Just simply a hobby that gives me joy and helps me grow to maybe one day write as exquisitely as the greats I admire.

My blog is my own way to look like the girls in the editorials and resemble Gwen, and when I see the pictures of myself that my friends or sister and I take between giggles, I feel beautiful. Not for anyone else but me.

Long were the days where I was only an athlete or the "funny girl". Long were the days of self preservation in fear of failure or hurt.

So, heres to what I want. (To secure my goals, I must publish them publicly)

- Write a book.

- Host a TV show.

- Star in a movie.

- Have a "sunroom" where I can watch the rain, where ever I am living.

So, let it rain, then the sun wake me from my writing as I sit on my floor, stuck to the hardwood.

A sunny afternoon -- perfect for lunch on the patio. Good food, good friends, and lots of bugs.

You can't have one...without the other. At least not when you live in Winnipeg.

The only thing to do is bear the bugs and enjoy because the heavens have blessed us with sun. And what do I do in response? Cover up my quick-to burn face with the season's latest must have.

A straw hat. I have recently acquired two, and I've already got my eye on another. It occurred to me after purchasing this new one that a cute hat literally makes every outfit look better. And you can wear it anywhere...anytime, WHILE fighting off those wrinkles that will come when I'm 21, after years of burning.

What more could you ask for in a hat?

The BEST Nights are the unplanned ones. The ones where you think you will wear sweats and end up changing into something more comfortable... a romper. Whoever invented those... was a genius, especially if you enjoy dancing. And unless you've been living under a rock for the past 5 months, you know they are the most trendy clothing staple on the market. And they sure are a staple, think about it - one whole outfit.. in just one-piece. It's revolutionary really.

Anyways, I enjoyed mine during a dancing night with my favorite babes. Jean, high waist, studs, pink lips, what more can you look for on friends? Fun, ridiculousness, support, what more can you look for in them? Nothing.

Run far, far away from any review in your sightline! If you see someone reading it in a newspaper who wants to show you, RUN, if you over hear someone at work discussing the 1 star, plug your ears, start singing Jennifer Hudson songs and then RUN.

Now there is a reason for your madness...

I did not read one review, listen to one person discuss it, well, besides the shrieks of my girlfriends and every woman I know. I went, I dressed up, I stood in line, and I absolutely loved it. The sides of my mouth were glued to my ears the entire time, and I probably screamed and laughed out loud every other minute. However, when I got home, I read the reviews and I found myself surprisingly agreeing with many of the points.

So, the point to my earlier recommended madness... do not let the reviews ruin your enjoyment of watching the fabulous lives of the most fabulous women that ever lit up the big screens.

But in truth none of the bad press, nay-sayers or Carrie-haters matter, because the movie is basically just porn. Porn that no woman is ashamed to admit she watched --Fashion porn.

And for a porno of purely fashion, I give it 5 stars.

No, I am not supporting Victoria's Secret's Junior Line...I am supporting Breast Cancer- and so are my fabulous friends and family.

For the past 4 years my family hosts an annual pink shaker where partiers of all ages dress in pink, bring a donation, drink, dance and play flip cup -- all for the cause.

The party was a complete success for the 4th year in a row, parents reportedly stayed on the dance floor well past 4 AM and a new flip cup rivalry was formed. But most importantly, thousands of dollars was raised for our local Cancer facility.

Los Angeles.

Either K and I had dirt on our faces the whole time or everywhere you go people assume you are someone famous... (I think it's the second one). I can't deny, I made the exact same assumption.
Every fancy car (aka every single one on the road) and every person in sunglasses that passed us, we would stop, and look to see if it was someone famous. If we did not immediantly recognize them, we thought "ohhhh i think they are that... person.. from...that show...maybe..?". And sure enough, everytime we popped on our own sunglasses and browsed on Rodeo, forks dropped, cars stopped and people starred. Sorry people, but I don't think you recognize me.

Yet.

Here's to hoping...

TO SAN FRANCISCO...

Three things no one ever told us about San Francisco:

1) It is actually a cold city, only reaching "summer" temperatures in September/October

2) It rains a lot, and buildings/ the bridge often disappear due to the overwhelming amount of fog

3) It is like no other city in North America

One thing we did/do know: It is beautiful.

I made the mistake of thinking SF, California would be sunny, hot and not as interesting and diverse as it actually is. It is like no city I have ever been, especially within the United States. The people are friendly, the buildings are old and unique, the hills are monstrous and it is very cosmopolitan- people from every race and background make up the colorful crowds. There is something about each city in the States that has the same "American" feel, the same characteristics, people, places and Walmart's. Yet, San Francisco does not possess one Walmart or commercial box store in the entire bay area. As a matter of a fact if your looking for anything unoriginal you better head out to the highway. Everything is local, and the locals are more than welcoming. We have met the nicest and happiest of people -- even when its pouring rain and people are wearing North Face parkas at the end of April (we stand out in our shorts and skirts).

The highlights of our adventure have been: the classic character of a british tour guide who sang various Beattles songs depending on her story, eating crab at every meal (Scoma's was the best!), $2 Tuesdays at City Tavern, chasing the perfect picture (the one above took about an hour of walking), and generally being soaking wet yet having so much fun at all points during our stay. Our journey began on Monday and doesn't stop til Sunday. We say goodbye to SF tomorrow to hit up LA, and apparently there is quite the rivalry between the two coastal cities. We won't be able to tell yet which city is better but so far San Francisco is one of a kind.

The title of this post is supposed to be read in the tune of the "announcement" song we used to sing at camp. (Reread with imagined tune, please... )

Now, a very important announcement.

The papers are finalized, the contract is signed. I am living with my best friend in our dream apartment come August. As excited as I am about our new home, I am more excited about the pair living in it. At the end of the summer I am moving to Toronto to live the big city life style from our sky high view, ready to conquer classes, dress the part, resist the temptations of shopping, fall into the temptations of shopping, dance til our blisters stop us and make each other breakfast every day.

The best things about my new roommate: Most creative person I know, does not care what anyone thinks, takes risks, has her own style, hilarious, rolls her eyes at me but still thinks Im funny, can take any article of clothing and "make it work", can dance until you are dragging her off the floor, is like a safe "locked down", more loyal than a dog and has never died her perfect blonde locks that can let her get away with anything while looking beautiful at all times.

Bad things? My house will always smell like peanut butter.

Happy Birthday CL <3 I am so excited to live with you and I promise I will learn to make beaver tails for us.

School's out for summer!

So, how do we celebrate? We hit the hills...

Hollywood Hills that is.

I have been hearing about summer plans, jobs and vacations for the past few months and finally, our plans are about to take off. Friends heading south to Florida, really south to Australia, and me and my sister, down to Cali. We plan to spend 4 days in Toronto, 4 days in San Fransisco and 4 days in LA before we both start our jobs in May. And I can't wait! I will have no cares in the world...except

WHAT TO PACK!

Due to the nature of our seemingly across North America vacation, a very small suitcase is required, and ample room must be left for cali shopping!

My ideal packing list....

To preserve space in the suitcase, I will need to make use of an outfit in more than one way, only bring 2 functional bags and 2 multi purpose shoes! Leaving lots of room for accessories..

A) Alexander Wang Backpack: What's a better way to store all your maps, camera's and souvenirs than in a fashionable sack, leaving your hands free for takin pictures!

B) Boch Oxfords: The perfect daytime walking shoe, for hopping on the trolley and looking daintier than Michelle Tanner

C)Jeffrey Campbell Nudies: The easiest way to dress up your touristy day time look- a HOT pair of heels, not too high of course, your feet will be ache'n.

D) Myne "Sydney" Romper: The perfect travel outfit, comfortable on planes, cool for the california sun, cute with the oxfords and sexy with the heels.

E) Metallic Fedora: Getting tired of the usual straw fedora? Im sure I'll get discovered in this glitzy one.

F) Olivia Harris Studded Crossbody: small enough to fit inside the backpack, trendy enough to hit the celebrity clubs.

Anyways, I must get back to mapping my shopping routes...

A weekend at home, a Saturday night on the town with my sister.

My ideal outfit.

My sister picked up a cute pair of slouchy boots that we knew would be ideal for pairing with summer dresses. But until the sun gods open up their hearts to Winnipeg, we tried to ease into the summer wardrobe.

Martinis, martinis, chili chicken and more martinis combined with heart to hearts, knocking over drinks with the hand movements to match our elaborate stories and trying to fit in amidst the Jersey Shore look-alikes.

I'm all about lipstick these days. There's something about a woman's defined lips that just needs to extenuated, sometimes the best outfits are the ones centered on the lips. Little black dress, purple lips...heels, loose t, red lips, and now this spring/summer, whites, pinks and florals will loosely hang off my (hopefully) bronzed self with light, pale, candy, colored lips.

I am so happy with the red carpet turn out at the Oscars. The stars certainly redeemed themselves and allowed me to once again, dream to be right there with them.

For that reason, I shall be positive. I will not post awful pictures of celebrities who just can't get it right. (ahem, Mariah Carey)

Rather, I will show my favorite dresses which I would give anything to wear, while accepting my Academy Award.

Hate the girl, love the dress. Love as in cant describe how much I love and hate as in..will make it so much easier to steal guiltlessly.

Sunshine after the Rain

My favorite thing about spring...

When the precipitation coming from the sky is not white and sticky, but big wet drops which wash the snow away. Then, a few hours or day later, the sun shines down, drying it all up, exposing the grass and making the world sparkle. Everyone takes out their sunglasses, puts their parkas away and the introduction of the highly anticipated spring wardrobes work their way into chilly mornings and warm afternoons.

I love that it is not fully spring or summer but people are starting to wear those clothes anyway, as if its going to make it happen sooner. I decided to do the same today...

It is highly recommended to follow suit, because maybe if we all do this, it will encourage the weather to keep up the great work and get HOT!

Floral skirts, jean shorts, trench coats-- do not fear! Just pair them with warm tights, high boots (rubber!) and light scarfs! And leave those mitts at home...

Things are looking up.

I moved to Ottawa 6 months ago and was unsure of what it would have in store for me. A town of politics, history, and more politics I doubted its ability to produce anything fashionable, unique or fun. For the first few months, I'm sorry Ottawa, thats how I felt. But upon further research, time, and amazing friends, I have discovered all of those things are in this city... where ever you are, you just have to give it a chance. I decided to stop caring about the way the people in my classes dressed, the apparent uniform of school sweaters and sweats and decided to dress from me. Not that I look down on the way people dress here but I decided that they are not trying to impress me, so why should I impress them. I wore a uniform for a few years, so I want to exercise some creativity. Slowly, I have bonded with people with their own unique style and personalities, realizing that they are way more than the way they dress (although it is very well), they are my friends who have helped me let go, discover Ottawa and have fun.

No matter where I am in the future, I know I will find those people who are right for me, who I can depend on and who I can admire, but I will not be able to find the same girls I have here. And for that I am thankful.

I have learned a lot about style, vintage shopping, that scissors can do so much more than I thought, and about life. I know the next month will be filled with Value Village, dancing with our eyes closed, bussing to the bars, and ripping off school convenience stores.

Wherever I was last year, deciding to come to this school, no matter where I am next year, I have not regretted a thing.

Whats not glamorous about lobster helpings bigger than your new cat eye sunglasses, valet parking at the mall, private yachts that could fit my house inside of them and beaches filled with tanned retirees. Fort Lauderdale, Florida.... the place to be when you hit 65. For those under the average age, I would maybe recommend a more...modern (no pun intended) place. Nonetheless, reading week was relaxing, sunny, beautiful and very satisfying in the shopping department. A few key items were purchased to add to my new summer wardrobe (following all of my rules).

Rules: No black, lots of textures, jean, jean, jean, floral, whites, nudes, pales in every shade.

Now the trick will be to save the special ones for summer and incorporate the extra special ones into slushy, snowy, Canadian weather. Being back in Ottawa has made me loath the feeling of wool socks and wellies....

My crazy friends were right again. (ATTENTION FASTER EARTH)

My lovelies and I did a crazy shoot on some random train in The Middle of Nowhere, Canada and I thought they were just crazy for making me put these on. But now, all day and all night I find myself lusting after a pair of pants just like these. . However, I would prefer that they were not red with sequin stripes (sequin stripes not visible in picture).

I tried on a few pairs a while back and they either seemed to make me look like a clown, or a horse. And not a chic clown or horse, so chic clown/horse pants- where ever you are, find me!

Maybe these are good Valentines Day pants?

I think I might go a bit more conservative for that outfit.

Mission: Not Quite Impossible

A big trend this fall and especially into this spring is the"lingerie inspired"look. I personally had not delved into it at the risk of looking...well, riskay. But done right, it can look sophisticated, elegant and beautiful. Done wrong it can look tacky, cheap and like you forgot to put a shirt on. Yet, it has proven to be a hit all over the runways, bringing back the 30's pin up girl look.

(Hint: also amazing in swimwear this summer!)

I had been keeping my eyes open on the vintage racks to literally, get the 30s look (Yes, I would wash it first!) And I actually had some luck just last weekend in Kensington Market.

For a mere $10, I picked up a lovely vintage bustier, simple and conservative enough to be worn out, but pretty enough to feel amazing.

With a blazer, and a high waist, full skirt, I truly felt like I had gone back in time. I wish I had a picture of the studded rocker boots I wore to bring it up to our era! While still obsessing with how much fun it was to wear this, I did my usual browse of some designers and websites and here are a few of my favorites.

This look can be very hard to wear, while it can look VERY RIGHT, I have seen it VERY WRONG.

You do not want to be in the second category...

DO: simple colors, modest bust lines, and pair with a more conservative outfit- high waisted jean shorts for casual, high waisted skirt or trousers for evening, studded and a bit of lace can be fabulous...provided that it is Alexander McQueen...

Golden Globes, Golden Dresses and Several Not So Golden Stylists

Overall, I am unimpressed with this years red carpet turn out at the 67th annual Golden Globes awards that took place this Sunday, the 17th. While a few stars shone brightly-literally, several failed and probably should have just got right back into their limos, avoiding all photo evidence. Sorry in advance to the celebs and their fans who I offend.

I will start with the bad so that I can work my way to the positive:

Mariah Carey- ill fitted, tasteless cut, and way too much cleavage. Her adolescent husband must have picked out this little (no pun intended) number. Did I mention that she is wearing more make up on her 'girls' than on her face? Highly inappropriate for an awards show.

Jennifer Aniston: Again in black...how revolutionary....And, we know you are in great shape but really, we can see that on the beach, leave the leg under the dress. The one shoulder cut sweetheart top is pretty but the world's highest slit emphasizes the tacky sandals and unneeded leg appearance. Oh and do something with your hair for once, a brush, a stylist? SOMETHING.

January Jones: I'm sorry, I am a fan of you but not your dress. Looks juvenile, too much black, not enough skin, does not show off her beauty, body, or style. Better luck next time.

Drew Barrymore: You look ravishing. Wonderful color, wonderful design, details, cut, fit, skin, hair, makeup, personality. BUT, what is that nub sticking out of your hip? Is that a pocket for your award? A growth? A mistake from the designer? A makeup holder? Please someone tell me because there is no explanation for it. The shoulder nub, I LOVE however. It is stunning. I will forgive you for your hip nub because you make up for it with your shoulder nub.

Diane Agron (Glee): Beautiful dress, beautiful girl. Not the most unique or bold dress but she went with something that looks fabulous on her and is an easy classic. No one could say a bad thing about her. Kudos to Glee girl.

THE WINNER: BEST DRESSED 2010

Anna Paquin: Representing Winnipeg well. A beautiful, bold choice. Golden. Lovely, trendy cut, looks great on her body type (Mariah: take note). Shoes are not awful although she is getting a lot of criticism for them - I would have chosen others but to each their own. If I was to hit the Globes...this is the dress I would pick in a heartbeat. This woman has come along way since "Fly Away Home" -- Fitting that she has now taken the best dressed award home...

Just yesterday I happened to walk past Jacob on my way through the mall. I am not usually the biggest Jacob clothing advocate but I live by the Jacob Lingerie half of the company. LaSenza is not even on the radar for me anymore when it comes to finding the right bra. But, Jacob on the other hand is stocked with beautiful, luxurious, conservative sleepwear which make you feel glamorous even when just lazing around in a robe and boxers. The 70% off sale caught my eye so I scurried in and purchased a pair of beautiful pyjamas- just for me. My new sleep shorts are so cute. I am seriously contemplating wearing them out...but something in my head (and every person I propose the idea to) is holding me back. Because my lack of camera/good lighting situation limits me from taking decent pictures currently, allow me to describe- Dark grey velvet, black lace trim, baggier fit, small black bow on waist band. If they were just a few inches longer, black tights and a black boyfriend blazer would compliment them perfectly. If only, if only.

Instead I will feel beautiful and excited every time bed-time rolls around and Im slipping into my Obama t-shirt and velvet shorts.

Also, breaking news: my new shorts have given me my inspiration back. Rather than dwelling on the unpleasant weather and lack of summer clothing, I will maximize my time with the trends we have now and look forward to the new ones to come.

What I am on the hunt for now?: lingerie inspired tops (silk tanks, lace and bustiers), trousers, electric colors, studs, studs, studs, and a perfect not so crazy leopard something.

What will I be on the hunt for?: (see earlier posts) floral, loose fits, pales, polka dots, technological prints (sooo innovative), tribal inspired, boyfriend everything- jeans, shorts, t's.

What I have found: Beautiful full stud dress from Zara and an XL floral menswear button up which I will rock as a dress the minute I arrive in Florida!

Maybe it is lost with the sun....
or with my money that I spent at christmas...
or with all the fun clothes hiding from January...

I tried to go for a few trends with this casual outfit- nautical (yes, white and blue stripes are allowed and encouraged in the winter!) and a little bit of a big shoulder. Too matchy, matchy with the tan bag and belt? I can't decide, I love both and it made me feel a little bit perkier wearing this rather than the usual sweater and black blazer/scarf.

Green grass, sun shining through the trees making shadows, dinner on the patio at sunset, drinking cold starbucks drinks, swimming, a golden glow (not that I get one) and mostly... the H&M garden collection.

This spring/summer/reading week I plan to:

See how long I can go without wearing black, wear as many floral prints as possible, lots and lots of light jean, purchase one light tan/cream leather jacket, acquire a safari/trench inspired dress, practically live in rompers and silk jumpsuits, work so hard on my tan so that the lovely pale colors make me look less pale, and somehow turn the straightness in my hair into beachy waves.

No, I do not think these goals are set too high. Sounds like a fun time in the sun to me. Looking at the H&M collection makes me go crazy when I trudge through the snow minutes later. And its only half way through winter!

I spent the day catching up with old friends, christmas browsing (and shopping!) and decorating the family tree. I could not imagine a more wonderful way to spend the holidays and I am loving every minute of being home!

This black skirt is actually high waisted but I decided to create a more casual look by wearing a baggier sweater and leaving it untucked. Did I mention how comfortable this outfit is? My definition of "sweats and a hoodie" is tights and a sweater (especially if its cashmere).

This is the mink coat I wrote about in one of my first posts . It was my great grandmother's making it more than 75 years old. I always thought it was luxurious and fun but today was the first day in my 18 years of marveling at it that I put it on and wore it in public. The belt definitely added to the modernity of the outfit as I had to be careful not to resemble a 1930s aristocrat. I must have pulled it off because I received many compliments and more importantly it kept me warm in the bitterly cold weather (-22 celsius).

Many people may not have the opportunity to snatch up an antique fur coat from an ancient ancestor but thrift stores are bursting with them. For in between $50-100, you can purchase a good quality fur coat and feel better about the reuse of animal fur. I would recommend tailoring it to suit your needs as many old fur coats tend to go for the "blanket" look. Add a trendy belt and voila you look set to hit the runway but warm enough to hit the town.

I bought another pair of thigh high boots awhile back...thinking that these new leather ones would be much more behaved than my suede ones purchased last year. I imagined us pounding the pavement, shopping, schooling, walking, with the boots in perfect position above my knee. But just like my suede ones, they disappointed me! So? What is my newest idea to solve the problem? Buying long strings of leather, tying them in a knot, wrapping them around the knee of the boot and tying them in place!

1/4 bitchy, 3/4 stylish. Olivia Palermo is my favorite City girl, New Yorker, socialite, celebrity and just all around girl in tabloids. This post is not that original as she does star in one of the most watched reality shows but I just need to point out that she is MY style-icon. She is my go-to girl on a Friday night when I just don't have any clue what to pull out of the closet. She has never worn an outfit that I do not goggle over and has 100% delivery rate when giving me ideas of what to wear or buy. Her personal style on and off the screen exudes sophistication. Wouldn't it be nice if her personality matched?

Some people think that even light, nudes, pinks and peach lipsticks are pushing it for everyday makeup. Dark lips are a whole new ball game. While you should try to stay away from rockin' the dark lips during the day, for night time, they are THE new red. Beautiful matched for this seasons looks of jewel tones and sparkly accessories, dark purple-plum lips are the hottest new fashion statement. And I mean statement- you need to have confidence to sport this trendy look. Big purple lips, simple hair, and not too much black (this look IS flirting with gothic)...will have you standing out at all the holiday parties.

But stay away from the mistletoe...smudges are just not attractive.

As much as I love holiday dresses and plan to find many occasions to wear several of them, a new idea for the season had my heada' turnin'.

Rather than the traditional, black, red or green, with sparkles and sequins, silk or chiffon dress of some sort for your holiday events, maybe mix it up a bit?

Personally Im not a fan of the whole ensemble, I just dig the vest. It would look fabulous with a black mini skirt, tights and simple cami or t for a holiday event!

Again I would dress this up a bit more for a party. But for lunch or the office, the paparazzi would probably be chasing you for wearing this...

A little DIY.

We wear them in our hair on clips and headbands...but until now I had never seen fabric flowers on jewelry. The thought of a colorful, flowered statement necklace is quite exciting and wouldn't a bracelet be beautiful? This Lee Angel piece is so lovely, but for $168, I think I would rather make the trip to Michaels....I think it would be quite easy to assemble.

When I am in the mood to learn about new trends and look at clothes that are a bit out of reach (store based in U.K - yes there is overseas shipping I know), I go to asos.com. On my most recent visit, I discovered an attraction that I had not yet been to. Their ONLINE free (!) magazine. I figured this may be just a lookbook that they decided to name magazine to seem cool but no, no, no. It is a full fledge fashion magazine. And because it is online, if you like a dress, scarf, bag or studded suede platform sandal- you just click and voila you are looking at it close up, choosing your size and pullin' out the card. This is taking out all of the work of looking through magazines, searching online, scowering blogs and celebrity pictures and searching for products on the hundreds of online shops. This is like the ULTIMATE shoppers guide. Just browse, admire, love, click, punch numbers, confirm address and you have the hottest trends on the way from the U.K. I have a feeling asos.com has become a little bit more to me than a site in my "browsing" list. How will I ever restrain myself? Must repeat 7 steps to recovery...

My newest lust-after accessory? Driving gloves. Despite the fact that I would never need them for the actual sport of driving (I usually like go to several km's under the speed limit), leather gloves are soooo needed for my fall wardrobe. The ones above are from Coach, and are lined with cashmere to add warmth. I particularly love this maroon color as it goes with everything and clearly I am one for versatility. But leather gloves seriously look amazing in every color -red, tan, black, blue, green, even prints like leopard and bolds like orange and pink. An extra bold color or pattern looks especially great to spice up a modest outfit. Another very note-worthy pair especially for the Winterpeggers is UGG Australia's new leather gloves in tan, black and brown lined with shearling! Once I find the perfect pair, I just may get a little need for speed.....

Right Down to Your Nails

Everyone remembers a time when your admiring a girls shirt, her boots, the cute headband in her hair -- she just looks so put together. But then you are misled by the chipped hot pink polish that looks like it hasn't been reapplied for....well, never. And then you can also remember the time when that girl was you. Who has time to perfectly do your nails every few days, and who has the money to getting a manicure once a week? However, I think many people would agree that women have just an extra bit of flair when they are styled right down to their nails. Now, despite my above comment on the girl with the hot-pink polish, I don't have anything against hot-pink nail polish, nor do I blue or green - if you can pull it off, great. But I do have 3 color choices that I believe will pull you through this fall and winter season resembling that stylish, put-together woman.

Just like you need the perfect little black dress you also need the perfect red polish (and hey why not where them together?) The above red, is a deep rouge that will compliment any outfit especially while wearing neutral/boring tones (black, brown, cream). A color to wear while going out, special occasions and when you just want to feel hot -yes, wearing red nail polish does have this effect!

The middle light grey OPI colour represents all of the nudes and mattes that are popping up on nails all over the runways and hands of celebrities this year. While your skirts, tights, necklaces and head bands can have glitz and glamour, there is no longer a place for it on your nails. This color along with the other mattes (light purple, light pink and even light green/turquoise) are great for Monday- Friday.

Last, but not least as it is my personal favorite, the go-to purple. Every fall, it pops up in several shades at salons all over the world- purple, purple, purple. Can be worn with anything, for anything, on anyone, can look sleek, rocker, pretty, whatever you want it to be. Dark purple is the answer when your brain is taken over by hundreds of colors staring at you in the middle of shoppers.

While not all of us have time to get a manicure or redo the whole set every few days, remember that a little effort does go along way, the 5 minutes of application and 15 minute drying time is worth it to exude overall style.

3.1 Philip Lim F/W 2009

Despite the fact that all of the designers are rolling out their Spring/Summer '10 lines... I don't even want to think about spring yet! I am still sooooo in love with fall clothes and will peruse the Fall/Winter collections for this season forever....well it least until the snow starts getting on my nerves. 3.1 Philip Lim is one that I seem to always be drawn to. His runway looks could be literally walked right off the runway and onto the street- and I would like to do just that! Lim taps into some great fall looks - the sequin full skirt, the glitter, the fringe, floral patterns, and clearly he loves to layer! The outfit on the left is especially to die for, the things I would do for that patterned, chiffon dress. It is the perfect daytime outfit mixed with the fur vest and slouchy bag.

And not to mention the matching tights the designer had all of his models wear...if there is one thing you can learn from this blog post and from this collection- this color of tights looks great with any fall outfit this season!

Ghost With Great Style

For "security" reasons, this lovely woman has turned into a ghost. I had to use her pic to show off her killer outfit- the sequin skirt, floral headband and leather jacket are the stars that stand out in this ensemble. She perfectly pulls off the sequin mini without looking like a Las Vegas go-go girl by pairing it with a relaxed grey t, and covering up with a leather jacket. The leather jacket with shoulder detail (H&M) adds the perfect bit of rocker to ease up from the girlie headband and skirt- making it to be the perfect combo for a certain someone's birthday!

Dreaming of Velvet

Velvet is one of this seasons must-haves. But it took me awhile to catch on... I mean, I had countless red, blue and green velvet dresses with big puffy sleeves for every occasion when I was a little girl- christmas, birthdays, new years, it was all the rage for a 6 year old in the 90's. And now my velour days have come crawling back to me and I just can't get enough. Diane Von Furstenburg, created the luxuriously soft navy blue dress in the foreground, it is the perfect mix of sparkle and sheen for a special occasion! The tights are a great way to mix the trend into your everyday wear, and can definitley be dressed up with a flowy top. I invested in a pair yesterday and I am already cozying up to them, have you ever felt the latest trend? It's so soft, Im thinking of re-upholstering...everything! The grey Thayer skirt from shopbop is another lovely item to easily mix velvet into your fall/winter wardrobe. Add one of the banana republic necklaces and you are ready for a glitzy night on the town!

After scouring the internet for days, maybe even weeks, I have found a haven of bold, sparkly, shiny, short, statement necklaces. I have facebook creeped strangers, pressed pause during certain moments in gossip girl and the City, gone to every one of my go-to websites and blogs, but I have not been able to find THE necklace. Now, I have found FIVE (it least!). Who knew Banana Republic appealed to more than just middle age, stylish business women? These necklaces are not cheap, but oh-so- worth it. I can not even pick out my favorite. Imagine how each would look under a blazer with a baggy white scoop neck... over top of a simple silky dress...with a sheath dress for "work"... with a tank top, black jeans and heels...the possibilities are endless, but my bank account is not. So, which will I choose for my christmas list?

My new furry friends...

I got a new pet today, he has many purposes: nice to look at, keeps me very warm, soft to pet and so much fun to play with in the snow. The breeder? Julie Pedersen.

If you have not heard about Julie Pedersen Designs, you will. A local Winnipeg designer who has reinvented the traditional Inuit Muck Lucks. Julie's "muckies" are the epitome of high fashion, superior craftsmanship and are just plain beautiful. And yes, they will keep your toes warm in the Winnipeg winter.
Today, for my birthday, my father and I visited Julie Pedersen in her studio in the exchange and we were overwhelmed by the amount of fur, fabric and creativity that was literally bursting through the doors. Julie greeted us as the perfect model of her product - relaxed in jeans and a T, but sporting luxurious rabbit fur with eccentric hot pink feathers sewn around the dark black suede. I can not imagine the selection this young up-and-coming has to choose from. But I did get a sneak peek- hundreds of boots line her studio as she is preparing for shows in both Toronto and New York in just a months time.

My boots, could not be more perfect for me. Black suede feet with black rabbit fur -- which is so soft I am tempted to sleep with them. And my favorite part- a gold embroidered floral arrangement on the outside right leg to add a perfect splash of "wow".

Since I've discovered "muckies" I don't think I could ever look at another UGG again. I thanked Julie for rescuing me from almost asking for a new pair for my birthday.

Now, I just need a name for my furry friends...

If I were to go to a Marc Jacobs party....I would wear this!!! The beautiful girls you see in the pic are models who spent the summer together in Tokyo. They started a blog to inspire people like me and my sister to dream to be as cool as them. This is what they wore to a party they went to for no big deal... Marc Jacobs. It has inspired me to get my hands on, well basically everything they are wearing but in particular I am loving the long sleeve black, body hugging dress and the sequin blazer on the other.

Fall into Fur

All summer long I eyed by great grandmothers mink coat that hung in the wardrobe -- pondering how it would look with just a few..alterations. Unfortunately, that would definitely never be allowed. So, in the wardrobe it would hang, taunting me all through out the fall and winter while other mink coats happily kept girls all over the magazines, runways and club scenes around the world hot and looking very good too.

But then, just as I began to get over my fur obsession, another one, one that I would never dare to put scissors near stumbled across my path. And here I am, crying inside as I try to think of a job where I can accumulate the funds to purchase it asap. For now, I will look at faux versions on Ebay, but I know nothing will compare. This little number from Elizabeth and James, also known as Mary Kate and Ashley's line, can be worn in 3 different ways.

3) Just the fur as an ever so trendy vest.

Change of Heart

Boots. So I am moving to Ontario in 2 weeks for the school year. I traveled there last year in November and January and the climate is quite different from my wonderful Winterpeg. Rather than wretched, bitter, cold with hard, crisp snow-- it is wet, slushy, under your skin and all over your brand new suede thigh high boots cold. Yes- the damn Ontario salty slush ruined my beauties. So, now that I am moving out there I had to reevaluate my winter shoe wardrobe. I had many late night fantasies about tall, hunter rain boots. How could you go wrong with the brand the Queen wears? I had seen cute girls wearing long t's, thick tights and then these gorgeous rubbers to their knees. It looked to effortlessly chic. Like hey- I don't want my feet to get wet so I bought a pair of $150 wellies. I had checked out ebay to browse the selection and had picked a nice "new" pair for about $70 with buy it now- quite a bargain. A few days later I saw a girl crossing the street wearing them, confirming my desire. Just before I hit purchase on my ebay account, I decided I should try them on at a real retailer to make sure of my size. But when I put them on and looked in the mirror - they just looked like big rain boots. Not cute, tall riding boots that happened to be rubber. The sales was also wearing a pair but they looked amazing on her. I looked down at her and realized she was 5'4 while I am 5'9. The extra length on my legs made them only go half way up my calf and looked sloppy. My hunter fantasies disappeared and I made my way to JOE at Superstore. Picked up a beautiful, more unique, detailed pair of plaid rubbers for only $34. And that night I had wonderful dreams about my new black and white plaid boots with cable knit tights and a pea-coat in Ottawa in January slushing around-- feet protected.
